We All Go Home — A JHSC Anthem

Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act requires a Joint Health and Safety Committee in most workplaces that regularly employ twenty or more workers, and a health and safety representative in smaller ones. The word that carries the weight is joint: the committee is made up of both worker and management members, and neither side can run it alone. That structure exists because the people who see a hazard first and the people who control the budget to fix it are rarely the same people.

The committee's core work is unglamorous and continuous — inspecting the workplace, identifying hazards, reviewing incidents, and making written recommendations the employer must respond to. None of that is enforcement. A JHSC has no power to discipline anyone, and a committee that behaves like a police force tends to stop hearing about problems, because workers learn that speaking up creates trouble for a colleague.

This track is written for the moment a new member realises the role is about prevention rather than blame. It is the argument for why the committee exists at all: hazards get fixed when the person who noticed one and the person who can act on it are talking to each other, in a forum built for exactly that.
