Elected on a Monday

3:00 · February 9, 2026

Most new committee members arrive without a safety background. They are a millwright, a picker, a nurse, or a driver who happened to be trusted by their coworkers, and the first meeting can feel like being handed a binder in a language nobody taught them.

The learning curve is real but short, and it is mostly about pattern recognition. Every rule in the workplace exists because something went wrong somewhere, and near misses are the same events with the injury removed. Once a member starts reading incidents that way, inspections stop being a checklist exercise and start being a search for the conditions that make harm likely.

This track follows that first stretch — the nomination, the confusion, and the point where the role clicks. It pairs well with orientation material for incoming members who have not yet been certified.

Lyrics

Verse 1 Elected on a Monday, break room vote Hard hat on, coffee cold Didn’t know what I was signing up for Just knew they called my name Thought it’d be a title, nothing more A line on a bulletin board Didn’t know I’d be learning What keeps us safe when the pressure’s on Chorus Now I see the bigger picture Every rule has got a reason Every near miss tells a story If we’re willing to listen I used to just show up and work Now I stand up when I can Elected on a Monday Now I’m a JHSC man Verse 2 Learned about the Act and the regs What “reasonable” really means Learned that silence costs more Than speaking up ever did Inspections, talks with management Writing things down, following through Turns out safety doesn’t happen Unless someone sees it through Chorus Now I see the bigger picture Every rule has got a reason Every near miss tells a story If we’re willing to listen I used to just show up and work Now I stand up when I can Elected on a Monday Now I’m a JHSC man Bridge We don’t shut the job down We make it better So everyone goes home Today and forever Final Chorus Yeah, I see the bigger picture And I’m proud of what we’ve done Working side by side together Till the day’s work is done It’s not a badge, it’s a promise To protect where we stand Elected on a Monday Now I’m a JHSC man
