How to Use This Self-Assessment

Rate yourself on each competency area using a 1–4 scale: 1 = No knowledge or experience, 2 = Basic awareness but limited practice, 3 = Competent with consistent application, 4 = Expert with ability to coach others. Use your results to identify priority areas for professional development.

The 10 Supervisor Competency Areas

  • 1. OHSA Knowledge — Understanding employer and supervisor duties, worker rights, and regulatory requirements
  • 2. Due Diligence — Documenting precautions taken; knowing what constitutes reasonable care under the Act
  • 3. Hazard Identification — Recognizing physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards
  • 4. Worker Training — Ensuring workers are trained before assigning tasks; verifying competency on the job
  • 5. Workplace Inspections — Conducting, documenting, and following up on regular workplace inspections
  • 6. Incident Investigation — Leading or participating in investigations; completing reports within required timeframes
  • 7. Safety Communication — Briefing workers on hazards; maintaining required notices; escalating concerns
  • 8. Safety Meetings — Facilitating toolbox talks and participating productively in JHSC meetings
  • 9. JHSC Cooperation — Understanding how to support the JHSC and respond to its recommendations
  • 10. Record Keeping — Maintaining training records, inspection logs, and incident reports

Interpreting Your Results

A score of 1 or 2 in any area indicates a gap that should be addressed through training, mentoring, or procedural support. Supervisors who are new to their role typically score lower across all areas and should work with their employer to develop a structured onboarding plan aligned with the OHSA.

Use the development plan section of this tool to identify one to three priority competencies, select specific learning activities (e.g., JHSC Part 1 certification, supervisor safety training, online OHSA modules), set a target completion date, and identify a coach or mentor to support your progress.
