You're not relying on his willpower. You're relying on the design. Another example is an interlock. Sign the date so that if you open it, the power cuts instantly. You don't need to trust someone to hit the stop button.
The gate does it for them. That makes so much sense. But it also sounds expensive. It can be. But you have to compare the cost of moving a grease fitting to the cost of a severed hand, a lawsuit, an investigation, and the morale hit of watching a colleague get maimed.
Paper safety is cheap. Real safety requires investment. So if we're moving away from blame and toward these engineering solutions, how do we find the problems before an accident happens? The source talks about the power of conversation. This is the part I love.
It changes the investigation from an interrogation into a collaboration. Usually a manager asks, are you following the rules? And everyone just nods and says, yes, boss, which is a lie. We talked about the supervisor who walks past the unsafe act, the tolerance of deviance. Right. And I want to challenge our listeners and myself really with this. It's easy to blame management or the company, but this applies to everyone, doesn't it? It does.

And by then, it's too late.
